The Standup

Priya had ninety seconds. The morning standup moved fast, and the founder wanted only the salient points — no preamble, no filler.

She skipped the slide about fonts. The tenuous link between the redesign and last week's dip in signups was not worth defending; correlation was not cause, and everyone in the room knew it.

"Launch is Friday," the founder said. "What is blocking us?"

Priya had rehearsed this. To hit the date, they would need to expedite the payments work — pull it forward, pair two engineers on it, and ship the rest behind a flag. It was aggressive, but doable.

Rohan, the lead engineer, raised an eyebrow. He was astute about scope; he could smell an impossible plan from across the room. "If we rush payments, something else slips," he said. "What are we cutting?"

That was the real question, and Priya had already decided. They would curtail the analytics dashboard to a single chart for launch and build the rest next sprint. Less impressive in a demo, but honest, and it kept the team from burning out.

The founder nodded slowly. "Ship the small thing well," he said. "We can always add later."

Priya sat down, her pulse still quick. She had learned that a good plan is mostly a list of the things you are brave enough not to do. The dashboard could wait. The trust of a team that hit its dates could not.

By Friday, payments worked. The single chart looked a little lonely on the screen — but it was accurate, and it was live.
