The Loaner Laptop

Jul 8, 2026 1 min read

The help desk queue was three deep when Priya finally reached the counter, laptop bag in hand. "Screen's flickering and the trackpad's dead," she said. "IT is trying to the whole ticketing system this week, so bear with us," the technician replied, typing quickly.

He plugged in her laptop and frowned. "Yep — trackpad . Looks electrical, not just dirty." He turned the machine over, unscrewed the base, and peered inside like a mechanic checking an engine.

"Can you fix it today?" Priya asked, thinking of the presentation due at three.

"I can loan you a spare while yours is in the shop." He pulled a boxy silver laptop from a shelf of similar machines. "We had to the touchpad sensors on this batch after a firmware update messed with the settings, but it should be solid now."

Priya accepted gratefully, though she eyed the loaner's scratched lid with suspicion. "Any expected today?" she asked, glancing at the wifi icon.

"Network's fine. Just your machine's out of commission for a day, maybe two." He tagged her original laptop with a work order and set it in a bin marked REPAIRS.

A week later, Priya returned the loaner and got her own machine back — cleaned, repaired, and looking almost new. "We the loaners too, once they come back," the technician said, noticing her surprise. "Keeps the whole fleet running a little longer."

Priya thanked him and headed to her three o'clock meeting, laptop humming quietly under her arm, no flicker in sight.
