The New Desk

Jul 25, 2026 1 min read

On her first morning, Mira arrived twenty minutes early and sat at the wrong desk. She was too to ask where she actually belonged, so she waited, hands folded, until someone noticed her.

That someone was Dev, who ran the support team and had a reputation for being . "You're at Anand's desk," he said flatly. "Yours is the one by the window." No cushioning, no smile — just the fact. Mira flinched, then realized he meant nothing unkind by it.

She spent the first hour being with everything: careful with her questions, careful not to jam the shared printer, careful to smile at exactly the right moments. Every new office felt, at the start, like a room full of tripwires.

By lunch, something loosened. A woman named Priya waved her toward the cafeteria and kept up a warm, easy chatter that asked nothing in return. Mira found herself growing of the place already — not the building, but the small kindnesses folded into it.

The turning point was Dev again. Passing her desk at four, he dropped a sticky note with the Wi-Fi password and a rough map of who sat where. "Should've given you this at nine," he muttered. It was the most thing a graceless person could manage, and Mira understood him better for it: brusque on the surface, generous underneath.

She stayed a little late, not from worry now but from a quiet contentment. The wrong desk had become the right one. Tomorrow, she decided, she would arrive early again — and this time she would know exactly where to sit.
