The Delayed Train

Jul 27, 2026 1 min read

The 6:40 was already forty minutes late, and the platform had grown — commuters pressed shoulder to shoulder, briefcases knocking knees, everyone pretending not to touch.

Ananya tried to stay . She had a knack for it usually, breathing through delays that undid the people around her. Tonight, though, her feet hurt and her phone was dying, and patience felt like a coat two sizes too small.

The man beside her began to — first under his breath, then louder, a running complaint about the railway, the weather, the government, the general unfairness of standing still. A few nodded; most just stared down the empty track.

What surprised her was how everyone stayed despite it. When the train finally groaned in, no one shoved. People stepped back for an old woman, made room for a stroller, apologized for bags they couldn't help. The crowd behaved better than it had any reason to.

Ananya squeezed into a window seat, , the tension of the last hour draining out of her shoulders as the train pulled away. The grumbling man got a seat too, and — this was the part she'd remember — immediately offered it to someone older, still complaining even as he did the kind thing.

People were like that, she thought: impatient and generous in the same breath. By the third stop the carriage had settled into the soft, swaying quiet of a journey finally underway, and the delay was already shrinking into a story she'd tell tomorrow, half-annoyed, half-fond.
