The New Phone

The new phone came in a box so clean it felt like a small crime to open it. Rhea had waited two years for the upgrade, and now she had one quiet Sunday to move her whole digital life across.

The first job was to download everything from the cloud — three thousand photos, a decade of messages, apps she didn't remember installing. She started the transfer and watched the progress bar crawl, resisting the urge to poke at it.

While it worked, she used the time to delete the debris on her old phone: blurry pictures, dead apps, screenshots of things she'd long since forgotten to care about. It was oddly satisfying, like clearing a cluttered drawer.

Halfway through, the new phone flashed a low-battery warning. She'd forgotten to charge it out of the box, and now she scrambled for a cable, willing the little lightning icon to appear before the transfer stalled.

The one real snag was the cable itself. Her trusty old charger, it turned out, was not compatible with the new port — a different shape entirely — and she had to dig out the one from the box, still twist-tied.

By evening it was done. The new phone, sleek and portable, slid into her pocket weighing almost nothing, holding everything. She set the old one on the shelf, briefly sentimental, then reminded herself it was a slab of glass, not a friend. Tomorrow it would go in a drawer, and by next year she'd have forgotten its name too.
